Very impressed

“Dearest citizens of Emporia:

For just over two days I had the honor and pleasure of being a small part of your community.  As a new inductee into the National Teachers Hall of Fame I had the opportunity to see up close how a town truly can roll out the red carpet.

From the incredible hosts families who catered to my family’s and my every need to the individuals we all met along the way during various activities, you impressed me!  You impressed upon me the genuine appreciation you have for educators.  You showed the finest example of what hospitality at its very best is.  The interactions with individuals I had from the youngest to the most seasoned will forever be fond memories of mine.

Thank you for the time, energy and devotion you pour into making the National Teachers Hall of Fame home and the best possible place to be for a teacher.”

Home at last

“Over the past four years, I have struggled with what the word “home” means.  Living in four different states in four years tends to leave one asking herself, “Exactly where am I from?”

When I agreed to become a Kansan in 2007, I must admit I was a bit reluctant to do so.  I am a Texas girl, and leaving that great state was not even close to the top of my priority list.

Over the last 18 months, I have come to realize not only is Kansas an amazing place, but I literally live in a utopia.  Yes, that would be Emporia, Kansas.  Not only is this a gorgeous town with wonderful history and adorable surrounding communities (Olpe is a prime example), but the people here are amazing.

I have never seen a community of this size open its arms when others are in need.  A prime example is the Tyson layoffs.  Community member and leaders have stepped up to help others.  And what about just day-to-day living?  The people are amazing.

So the question “Where am I from?” was still unanswered until last night, when I went over to a girlfriend’s house for a birthday celebration.  Did I mention this house was built in 1875?  As I sat with other friends and watched our children laugh and play, her hubby grill out for us, and have great conversations about absolutely nothing controversial, I decided Emporia, Kansas ,is where I am from.  So to all of those who have wrapped your arms around me, I say thank you!”

Fire Help

“We had a fire in our home at 1218 W. 18th Ave. on the evening of Resurrection Sunday. Our chimney caught fire and damaged the living room and garage as well as the roof and smoke damage.

“I was amazed at how quickly the Emporia Fire Department responded and how well trained, professional, and caring they are. They were an amazing team with each one knowing his assignment by heart. They went to great lengths to limit the damage from extinguishing the fire and worked hard to preserve what they identified as important items and keepsakes. Then, they covered the hole in the roof and were gone as professionally as they arrived — all with kindness, compassion, understanding and clear explanation of our next immediate steps.

“We are truly blessed to have such a professional department in our city keeping us safe. Thank you Emporia Fire Department for saving our home. We owe you a debt of gratitude we can never repay. We are also thankful for all the neighbors who came to our aid bringing shoes, coats, umbrellas, plywood, comfort and encouragement on that cold, rainy late afternoon. Emporia is a great place to live. Our house is coming back together again with the care and help of Tobias Insurance Agency and the professionals too numerous to list who are working on our home. I hope everyone sleeps better tonight knowing there are many caring people in this fine community.”

“Building Futures is reminiscent of the community atmosphere I experienced almost 50 years ago as a freshman at ESU. As then, our focus is the total community forward. Times may be stressful, but this cooperative effort truly has Emporia moving forward.  Join the excitement!!"

Emporia Mayor Bob Agler

"Building the playground at Peter Pan Park was a great experience, lots of people from different walks of life working together and a chance to have a variety of people together again can be an annual fishing derby at the park. The older/retired folks can help organize and show the kids fishing tips and of course it would give the kids a chance to meet and make new friends. Senior citizens are a great influence on the kids and it would be great to have a community event where all age groups can participate."
